Historical Note

The first known evaluation of the institution by something like an accrediting body was conducted by the University of Illinois in 1935 to determine Grand Junction State Junior College's suitability as a junior college. The institution passed that evaluation and has been evaluated by a variety of appropriate accrediting bodies since then. Currently Colorado Mesa University's accrediting body is the Higher Learning Commission.

Summary

Records related to the accreditation of Colorado Mesa University since its founding in 1925, including accreditation of individual programs.

Arrangement

Records will be arranged according to the level of accreditation (institutional versus program specific) and chronologically within those series.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Records were transferred to Special Collections and Archives from the President's Office, the Office of Academic Affairs, individual program or departments, and the Office of Institutional Research.

Separated Materials

Supporting evidence provided to accreditors to assist in their evaluation of the institution and its programs has in most cases been removed because it duplicates records found in other collections within the University Archives. Per records management retention schedules, the institutional self studies and final reports of the accreditors constitute the only official records of the accreditation process.
